Dawn Cole, Lorna Dallas Conte, Helder Clara, Dan Thompson and Graham Ward developed work in response to the Lochnagar Crater, France and TS Eliot’s The Waste Land.
The crater was formed on 1st July 1916, the first day of the battle of the Somme and the artists to have been granted permission by site owner, Richard Dunning, to work at the site and have access to his personal archive.
T S Eliot’s poem The Waste Land was partly written in Margate, and is itself a response to the First World War.
The five artists began their journey on March 16th 2017 shared the development of the project on social media and through this site, as they connected Wasteland to Wasteland.
